People don't learn by osmosis

Or vibes, unfortunately. What actually works is backed by decades of research in cognitive psychology and instructional design. Here are a few principles I rely on when I'm designing learning that's meant to stick, not just get sat through.

Working memory has limits

The brain can only hold so much at once. Overload someone with content and you don't get better retention, you get less of it. Simplifying materials and cutting anything that isn't essential consistently improves how much people actually take away.

The practical version: break content into smaller pieces, and be ruthless about what actually needs to be there.

Retrieval practice beats review

Reading something twice feels like learning. It mostly isn't. Actively recalling information, being asked to produce it rather than just recognize it, is what strengthens memory. This is well established in the learning science research.

The practical version: build in regular, low stakes quizzes or recall moments instead of relying on review alone.

Relevance drives engagement

People pay attention when they can see why something matters to their actual work. Connecting new information to a real situation increases both motivation and how well it sticks.

The practical version: use real scenarios and case studies instead of abstract examples. Show the application, not just the concept.

Learning is built, not delivered

Understanding isn't something you hand someone. It's something they construct, through doing, reflecting, and applying. Active learning strategies, ones that ask people to engage rather than absorb, consistently outperform passive delivery.

The practical version: build in exercises that require people to apply the concept, not just read about it. Problem solving, discussion, practice.

The bottom line

Effective learning design comes down to a few things: limit the load, build in active recall, make it relevant, and let people construct their own understanding instead of just receiving it.

None of this is new. It's just easy to skip when you're moving fast. Worth slowing down for.
